Turkey Violated UN-Backed Syria Ceasefire

Sunday 28 February 2016
Turkey Violated UN-Backed Syria Ceasefire

Alwaght- Turkish forces have violated a UN-backed ceasefire that has recently come into effect in the war-torn Arab state.
"The first violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2268 has been made by Turkey. Its troops shelled the cities of Tal Abyad and Uslub,” head of the Syrian Kurdish mission to Moscow, Rodi Osman, told Russia’s Interfax news agency.
Osman added that Turkey must be urged to stop "violating Syria's sovereignty."
The comments come as a ceasefire agreed by the United States and Russia took effect in Syria on February 27 midnight Damascus time. The Syrian government also accepted the terms of the truce on condition that military efforts against ISIS and al-Nusra Front Takfiri terrorsits, who are not included in the ceasefire agreement, continue.
Meanwhile Russian monitors of the ceasefire in Syria have recorded nine violations of the truce over the last 24 hours. They said overall the ceasefire is holding up, but some of the violations were attributed to the rebels.
Pledges to observe the ceasefire have been submitted by 17 “moderate” rebel groups and elders of 35 towns and villages, who said that they would expel anyone not willing to uphold the deal and enlist those willing to do it into local militias, the Russian center for reconciliation said. The US has filed a list of 69 rebel groups who have subscribed to the ceasefire, they said.
The ceasefire was brokered by leading world powers, including the US and Russia, and is meant to pave the way to reconciliation between the Syrian government and moderate rebel forces, which would together agree on a peaceful transition in the country. Some of the stronger forces in Syria, including the terrorist groups ISIS and al-Qaeda affiliated al-Nusra Front, rejected the negotiation and are not subject to the ceasefire.
