Analysis of Azerbaijan Parliamentary Election

Sunday 6 September 2015
Analysis of Azerbaijan Parliamentary Election

Alwaght- Parliamentary election in Azerbaijan will be held on November 1, 2015 by order of President Ilham Aliyev. In the meantime, some Azerbaijani political parties have already identified their candidates.

These parties have nominated their candidates for the election through forming a political bloc or running their candidates individually.

Azerbaijan Popular Front Party and Musavat Party (Equality Party), the largest opposition bloc in Baku have not yet been a member of any political bloc, and have made some plans to individually participate in the parliamentary election. Although Azerbaijan Musavat Party has been weakened due to internal conflicts in the party resulted from disputes over electing the head of the party in 2014, officials of Musavat Party after hours of lengthy discussions, finalized the list of their candidates for the parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan among whom the name of Issa Qanbar, a former leader of the party is seen among the candidates.

Azerbaijan Popular Front Party, the same as Musavat Party has suffered internal conflicts and the risk of collapse, as a large number of its members joined Razi Nurullah, the former deputy, and Ali Karimli, the leader of the Popular Front was dismissed. However, if the party intends to participate in the parliamentary election, it will do it through Baku national opposition Council led by Jamil Hasanli.

However, the National Council of Democratic Forces of Azerbaijan that Popular Front Party is one of its members has not yet decided on participation in the parliamentary election and insists on transparent and democratic elections in Azerbaijan. Islamic Party of Azerbaijan, one of the major parties of Azerbaijan still does not have a plan to participate in the elections. So far, among the parties of Azerbaijan republic, only Azerbaijan Hope Party has delivered its documents to Azerbaijan Central Election Commission to run candidates for the election.

The interesting thing is that as the Election Day becomes closer, one does not see the election passion among Azerbaijani people as the opposition parties believe there would be no transparent and democratic election in Azerbaijan. The opposition believe that the election process in Azerbaijan is not democratic and in this election, the government will fill the ballot boxes, like the previous ones and will certainly win the majority of seats. It is expected that a limited number of seats will be given to opposition parties to show their alleged respect for Democracy in Azerbaijan.
